SOUNDINGS: POETS FROM THE DOOR COUNTY ANTHOLOGY

Poetry Rocks! Reading Series

Copper Rock Café, 210 W. College Ave, Appleton  

7 pm, featured readers followed by open mike

Soundings features the work of 57 poets on many dimensions of Door County: the big waters and inland lakes; iconic locations; typical buildings and businesses; social activities; notable characters; the weather. The anthology was edited by the Door County Poets’ Collective. Estella Lauter, past Poet Laureate of Door County, was inspired to create the anthology after reading a similar one about Madison. Soundings, the title of the anthology, is a nod to the peninsula’s nautical heritage, a term for the way sailors in the past measured the depth of water, but, Lauter explains, “also refers to the practice of reading poems aloud to hear all the possibilities of meaning in the voices they carry

EKPHRASTIC ART/POETRY SHOW

Georgia Ressmeyer and Marilyn Zelke-Windau are coordinating this ekphrastic art/poetry show featuring poems by members of the Mead Public Library Poetry Circle (including, among others, Maryann Hurtt, Nancy Harrison Durdin, Dawn Hogue, Sylvia Cavanaugh, Kathryn Gahl, and Jean Biegun) and artwork by members of Sheboygan Visual Artists. The gallery will also be open for viewing from 11:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 19, 20, and April 2, 3, 9, 10.

Robert Nordstrom worked as an editor/writer for various trade and scholarly publications for over 30 years. A Pushcart Prize nominee, he has published poetry, fiction and essays in numerous publications. His poetry collection, The Sacred Monotony of Breath, was published by Prolific Press in 2015.

Poetry reading with C. Kubasta and the artwork of Mollie Oblinger – featured in Kubasta’s new book,

All Beautiful & Useless—from. Oblinger is associate professor of Art at Ripon College. Kubasta experiments with hybrid forms, excerpted text, and shifting voices—her work has been called claustrophobic and unflinching. A Lovely Box (Finishing Line Press) won the 2014 Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets Chapbook Prize. She currently teaches English and Gender Studies at Marian University, in Fond du Lac.

Poetry Doings in NE WI

Here’s news about poetry events in the northeastern part of the state:

MONDAY, OCTOBER 12, at 7 p.m. in the Wriston Art Center Galleries at Lawrence, the Mia Paul Poetry Series welcomes poet John Murillo, author of Up Jump the Boogie, for a reading, signing, and reception. ​ Plan to arrive by 6:45 or earlier to get refreshments and sign up for the open reading, with the reading beginning promptly at 7  We now have a sound system, and parking is free after 6:00 pm!

Sara Parrell’s work has appeared in Crab Orchard Review, Tupelo Quarterly, qarrtsiluni, Wisconsin People and Ideas, Verse Wisconsin, and other journals, and she co-curates The Bridge Poetry Series at the Chazen Museum of Art. A pushcart nominee, she was awarded first prize in the 2008 Poetry Center of Chicago’s Juried Reading for her manuscript Psalms of New Orleans, and received the Leo Love Poetry Merit Award in 2012 from the Taos Writers’ Conference. Her collaboration with photographer Thomas Ferrella, HYBRID: Transported by Word and Image, was installed in Madison and Milwaukee hybrid taxis. She is faculty at the UW-Madison School of Nursing, and a member of the Madison Metropolitan School District’s mental health team.

Sarah Gilbert returned to writing poetry in the midst of two decades of Lynch Syndrome cancers, with a chapbook of her cancer poems, Tendril, published by Finishing Line Press in January 2015. Her work has also appeared in Fox Cry Review, Wisconsin Poets Calendar, The Healing Muse, Your Daily Poem, and Sharing Widely Living Deeply.  She serves as a regional VP for the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets and hosts this series!! in Appleton, where she lives with her husband, two daughters, three cats, and one old dog.

Hear Poetry, Read Your Own at Mother Fool’s

Wisconsin poet and former CWW board member Susan Elbe will be the featured reader at 7 p.m. Friday,Sept. 4, at Mother Fool’s Coffeehouse, 1101 Williamson Street in Madison. Susan’s reading will be followed by an open mic.
